In the Summer of 2018, I joined the crew of the tall ship Hawaiian Chieftain. I say “joined”; in truth, I was shanghai’d, as my friend Annaliese volunteered me on my behalf. This conscription would be the first of many brilliant maneuvers I watched her make as Chief Mate of the Hawaiian Chieftain over the summer. Midway through my tour, my recently widowed mother declared bankruptcy and I returned home early, leaving what would prove to be a rare and unique experience with the skeleton crew that had become my family. Hawaiian Chieftain has since been retired and sold. I remain in touch with this beautiful crew.
